I don't trust people who don't like food. Like, excuse you person, but are you aware of what you're missing? Only one of the greatest things on the planet. A language that people, from any point on a map, can understand. Different cultures, tastes, and adventures. Oh, but you only want cheese on your pizza? Cool.
I worship food. I truly think chefs are artists working with paintbrushes that are actually called knives and whisks and blow torches (etc.). And this artistry is something I was introduced to as a child. It all comes down to my family. My mother grew up with 3 brothers, so meals were hearty and important. After she and my dad moved to Phoenix, AZ she started volunteering at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, and ended up getting hired to run the Scottsdale Culinary Festival, which she ran for 13 years. While doing that, she worked with many chefs, some who became very well known, both in Phoenix and internationally. Here she is inspecting some snakes with the chairman of the 5th annual Scottsdale Culinary Festival:
Such a casual badass, my mother. Somewhere in the middle of all of this, she had me, and she put me in cooking classes as soon as she could. I was introduced to all of these chefs; Vincent Guerithault, Wolfgang Puck, Barbara Fenzl (who happens to be my godmother), Jaques Pepin, Martin Yan, etc.. By the age of 10 I knew my way around a kitchen and how to properly wield a chef's knife. I would cook dinner with my mom whenever she needed help, and as I got older, my house was the house where all the kids would come after school. I like to think that my friends came over because they liked me, but deep down I always teased the thought that they might actually just love the food that they were almost certain to eat.
My family also traveled a lot while I was growing up. The first time I went to France I was 9 years old. Since then I have been to the British Virgin Islands, Scotland, England, Mexico, Canada, South Africa, and France another 3 times. I (or my mom, when I was younger) made sure that I tried the cuisine native to these places. These experiences have never left me. I'll try anything. If I like it, I keep eating it.
Now, I'm in my twenties and food is still a hugely prominent aspect of my life. However, I am currently pursuing a career in the film industry. While at film school, some of my friends started a collection of photos of me eating. But not the cute kind of eating, if that's even a thing. I mean, like REALLY eating. You know when you bite into a piece of pizza and all the cheese and toppings fall off and hang off your chin? It's like that but with every food ever. We called it Katy Eats, and those photos are what inspired me to write this blog. This is not a health blog, or a diet blog, or even a cooking blog (although I may post the occasional recipe). This is very much a blog about eating wonderfully good food, my experiences while eating wonderfully good food, and where to find wonderfully good food.
My goal is to inspire and educate those who love food and want to know more about the culinary world. If that's what you're all about, you're in the right spot. To quote the fabulous Julia Child, "People who love to eat are always the best people." Welcome to Katy Eats.
